著者は貴重な歴史的データに基づいて、イスラム社会構造の観点、国家革命思想の起源と進化、独立運動の内部構造、共和国の権力的構造、国際関係・政治のから東トルキスタンを分析している。1995年にオリジナルである日本語版が出版されて以来、本書は東トルキスタンの独立運動に関してまとめられた最も権威のある研究活動として認められてきた。

この度出版された英語版は参考文献として、今日の新疆ウイグル自治区における顕著な諸問題について、充実した内容が加えられることにより、大幅な増補・改訂がなされている。
